How to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

If you’re anything like me, you spend the year looking forward to the amazing food that comes with the winter holidays, but how about trying to stay healthy during the holiday season? It seems like the perfect excuse to eat whatever you want, whenever you want. While often times I would agree, this year I’m trying to maintain my health. There can be a great balance between enjoying that piece of pie while not over indulging. Now you may be wondering, “what good is the holiday season if I have to ‘watch what I eat'”? Well, it’s not as much “watching what you eat” as “listening to your body”. Here’s a few ways to stay more in tune with your health this holiday season.

Rotate Your Drinks

With the holidays comes one of my favorite things: cocktails. Who doesn’t love a good holiday cocktail? Of course we all know the secrets behind a delicious drink: sugar. It’s easy to keep kicking back those yummy mixers, but try your best to rotate them out. Best choice? Rotate a cocktail with a glass of water. Now if that doesn’t sound enticing, then rotate it out with a nice glass of red wine. With so many health benefits, you could argue that it’s a better choice than water (but of course, that’s never been proven).

Don’t Forget the Gym

It’s so easy to put aside your workout regimen when the holidays come around. Why go workout when you could go holiday shopping or bake cookies? It’s so easy to do, I’ve been guilty of it plenty of times in the past, but try not to do that to yourself. You’ve been busting your butt for weeks or months, don’t throw it all away now. Continue your weekly visits to the gym, you won’t regret it. It’ll keep you feeling energized and confident come the family events.

Pack Snacks

Holiday shopping is the best kind of shopping: you’re walking through the mall, everyone’s in a cheery mood, lights everywhere, Christmas music, and then you smell Auntie Ann’s soft pretzel down the way. It’s been a long day shopping and you just really want to grab a sweet snack, but it can become a bad habit. There’s so many alternative snacks you can carry in your purse for when you need a little boost. Some of my favorites are fruit, nuts or protein bars.

Keep Your Coffee Black

When the holidays come around, so do all the amazingly delicious drinks that Starbucks has up their sleeve. Peppermint mocha everything! Now don’t get me wrong, I love a speciality drink from Starbucks every once and a while, but everyday is bad for your pocket book and health. It’s okay to have a peppermint mocha here and there, but try keeping your coffee black otherwise. A little creamer never hurt anyone, but all the sugar that’s put into these drinks don’t energize you; they will instead slow you down. You’ll get a quick sugar high and then crash, leaving you needing more coffee. So do yourself a favor a enjoy coffee without all the sugars to actually get the boost you need and spare some unneeded calories.

It’s always difficult to stay healthy during the holiday season. It’s such a joyful time spent with loved ones and amazing food, but you can enjoy it all without over indulging. Spend your holiday season listening to your body and coming into the new year and happy and healthy you. What tips and tricks help you stay healthy for the holidays?

    I LOVED this post! Definitely something I needed to read. I totally agree with your point about staying away from the sugary Starbucks’ drinks. Even though they’re fantastic, they are super unhealthy. I really need to be better about getting those!

    I think the alcohol swap is a really great point. It’s so easy to knock back sugary cocktails at all the festive parties.

      Exactly! Obviously easier said than done to rotate it out but hey, it’s the effort that counts.

    These tips are so simple and easy to integrate but forgotten so quickly as the holidays roll around. Getting up the energy to keep going to the gym with so many other more exciting things going on is something I really struggle with personally. Thanks for the reminders and motivation!
